Titleist CB vs. MB: Which Is Better?

Titleist is a classic and iconic golf brand. No doubt…

The brand continues to evolve and incorporate technology into its equipment, offering users incredible performance.

But while some of their designs, especially the T-series model, feature innovative technology, other irons are practically designed for the purist.

The Titleist CB (Cavity Back) and MB (Muscle Back) are some of such designs made by the brand.

They don’t feature better technology, as the utmost goal is to keep it simple. They look decent and are unique.

This article will differentiate between the CB and MB models using the Titleist 620 series to establish the better one.

Let’s get started.

Overview of the Irons

The Titleist 620 CB and 620 MB irons are two of the company’s newest offerings, at the time of this writeup.

These 620 series irons are the perfect, one-piece forged irons specially designed for shot-making and precision on the course.

The CB series signifies the cavity back model for an improved long iron performance, while the MB represents the hardcore muscle back blade.

Unlike other Titleist series that feature elegant refinement, these irons only feature subtle changes, making them ideal for the purist.

620 CB Irons

Titleist CB vs. MB

The 620 CB irons are proper player-forged cavity back irons with perfectly compact heads, thinner toplines, and soles for improved turf interaction.

They feature minimal offset, making them suitable for low handicappers. If you’re already at an advanced stage in your journey, you don’t need too much offset, so they are a perfect option.

They also have the tungsten weighting feature to enhance balance.

620 MB Irons

The 620 MB irons, on the other hand, are proper muscle-back forged blades. Like the 620 CB, they have a minimal design with nothing flashy … just the basics.

They have progressive blade length for optimized play throughout the set but no sole tungsten to help with increased MOI and launch.

They are precision-forged blades of pure muscle, offering an unrivaled blend of control and feedback for skilled shot makers.

Their classic and high-quality build makes them the epitome of tradition and craftsmanship in the golfing world.

Why Fitting Is Important

Most pros know the importance of fitting when picking an iron. However, it can easily be missed by the excited beginner who wants to place all his trust in a trusted brand.

But if you choose the right product for the wrong purpose, you achieve nothing. Fitting is your well of selecting the right club for the job.

Fitting is crucial when selecting a golf iron because it ensures optimal performance tailored to an individual golfer’s unique swing characteristics.

Properly fitted irons match a player’s swing speed, lie angle, and other factors, leading to better control, accuracy, and distance.

They can significantly enhance comfort and confidence on the course, making the game more enjoyable and improving overall scores.

So, as you compare both the CB and MB, don’t forget fitting…

Titleist CB vs. MB: Similarities

A warning… There are very minimal differences between the CB and MB irons.

In fact, this is the first time I’m comparing two irons that are so similar. Anyway, you want the comparison so let’s get into it with the similarities first:

Build

Both iron models exhibit some similar features. They are forged from 1025 carbon steel with progressive blade length for exceptional playability and feel.

The loft, length, and lie are all the same, making it relatively easy to join a combo or mixed set of the two models.

They feature a classic feel and shape with a matching profile.

Sound and Feel

Both irons perform excellently well in the sound and feel department. When compared, it’s hard to determine which is better.

They have a soft and controllable feel. They also have a solid feel of impact. However, from users’ reviews, the 620 CB has the heart of many golfers.

Shaft Offerings

The Stock Shafts Offerings for the Titleist 620 MB are Tensei White AM2 graphite and Project X (steel).

On the other hand, the 620 CB has the Stock Shaft offerings of Project X LX and the same Tensei White AM2. Not much difference, I know!

Titleist CB vs. MB: Differences

Titleist CB vs. MB

While they exhibit similar features, the differences between both irons are noticeable and significant. Let’s compare them using some factors as follows:

Looks

As discussed above, both irons have a minimalist yet elegant look. No visible technology and no bloated sole sticking out.

However, looking closely, you can see that the MBs, being a player’s irons, features a thin topline and minimal offset.

The heads are compact, but the CBs have a thicker topline and sole than the MB, even though it’s still slim.

They have a brushed metal finish that looks incredibly good and adds more to the “tech” appearance they ooze.

This means they’re going to look impressive as they are at providing excellent feedback.

Forgiveness

I can’t say these irons offer users incredible forgiveness, but the CBs are more forgiving than the MBs. They are designed to be more forgiving since they are cavity back irons.

They also laugh the ball higher than the MBs irons, but it often takes more work to shape shots with the CB irons.

Generally, MBs offer decent forgiveness, not just as much as CBs. They are not harsh on mishits and can also help improve the game.

Looking at both and the reports from testers, they don’t have much forgiveness compared to the AP2.

So, if you’re looking for irons that offer superior forgiveness, you may want to try the CB as it’s slightly more forgiving but not very much as mentioned.

Playability

The 620 CBs offer better ball flight than the MBs.

They launch the ball higher because of their low center of gravity (COG) and perimeter-weighted design.

The MBs have medium to lowball flights. The shots aren’t as powerful and are more exacting.

Titleist CB vs. MB: Which Is Better?

The Titleist irons are one of the best products in the market. They both offer decent performance and good value for money.

When compared, the CB irons have better forgiveness, distance, and ball flights. On the other hand, the MB irons have average forgiveness and distance but excellent feel and workability.

While the CB irons might seem the better option, the winner will depend on your preferences.

If you’re a skilled golfer who wants a more traditionally lofted iron set, the 620 CB iron will be a good choice.

The MB irons are most suited to mid to low handicappers as they are precisely what they ought to be: pure player irons.

When choosing the better option, the crucial factor is to select the one that matches the needs of your specific game.

Typically, you can also test both clubs before you purchase one to be confident of making the correct choice.
